Main Purpose and Description

The practice of spreading organic material like compost, straw, manure, dry leaves, grass clippings or wood chips onto the surface of the soil. Can be used on all crops and orchards, not pastures. Improves plant growth. Reduces loss of water from the soil surface. Moderates soil temperature (not too hot, not too cold). Limits weed growth and makes watering easier by protecting the soil.
