Mr Fortune Tafirenyika

Organisation: Environment Africa

Location: Zaka Rural District, Masvingo Province

Fortune Tafirenyika has seen first-hand how rainwater harvesting and conservation can transform lives. By adopting these practices, he has strengthened the food, nutrition, and income security of his family. Water harvesting has enabled him to do early planting for better yields, conserve biodiversity through cultivating 15 different plant species, and achieve two cropping cycles per season using rainfall.

In an area known for its dryness, these methods have also dramatically improved groundwater availability—boosting the performance of his boreholes from 120 litres per day to 500 litres per day. For Fortune, rainwater harvesting is not only about farming efficiency, but also about resilience, biodiversity, and turning challenges into opportunities.
