Module 1 Assignment 1: Learning About Rainwater Harvesting and Conservation in Your Area
Assignment Overview
In this assignment, you will learn more about rainwater harvesting and conservation by speaking to people in your own area. You do not need to be an expert in RWH&C. The purpose of this assignment is to help you explore what people already know, what practices they may be using, and what water challenges affect food production in local farming, gardening or household contexts.
What You Need to Do
Interview or speak to 3–5 people about rainwater harvesting and conservation. These may be farmers, gardeners, household members, teachers, community garden members, agricultural advisors, youth leaders, extension officers or other people who know something about food gardening, farming or local water use.
Suggested Interview Questions
You can adapt these questions for your own context: 1. What type of farming, gardening or food production are you involved in? 2. What are the main water challenges you experience? 3. Have you heard of rainwater harvesting and conservation? 4. Are you using any rainwater harvesting or water-saving practices? 5. If yes, which practices are you using? 6. Where did you learn about these practices? 7. What works well with these practices? 8. What challenges do you experience? 9. Are there other practices you would like to learn more about? 10. Would you be willing to share your knowledge with others?
What to Include in Your Assignment
Write a short report of approximately 3–4 pages, or 1 500–2 000 words. Your report should summarise what you learned from the people you interviewed and connect this to what you learned in Module 1.
Use Amanzi for Food Resources
Include at least one Amanzi for Food resource in your assignment. For example, you may refer to a resource on greywater harvesting, roof water harvesting, diversion furrows, mulching, trench beds or another RWH&C practice. Explain briefly how this resource helped you understand the practice or the local water challenge better.
