Using Diversion Furrows at Home and Homestead Level

How to Create a Diversion Furrow

Follow the steps below and watch the video alongside them. The guide and video work together: the steps give you a clear sequence, and the video helps you see what it looks like in practice.

Step-by-step guide

Step 1: Observe runoff during rain — Watch where water flows, gathers, and runs off. Decide which runoff you want to divert.
Step 2: Mark the route — Mark a route that intercepts runoff and carries it toward your garden, field, or storage area. Use pegs and string if available.
Step 3: Dig the furrow — Dig a trench about 30 cm wide and 30 cm deep. Place the soil on the downslope side of the trench.
Step 4: Lead the furrow into your harvesting area — Make sure the furrow leads into the rainwater harvesting method you are using (e.g., garden beds, trench beds, trees, or a storage point).
Step 5 (If leading to a tank/pond): Add a catchpit — If the furrow leads to a tank or pond, guide it into a small catchpit first to trap sediment and debris before water enters storage.

✅ Water flows slowly (not fast)
✅ No erosion forming
✅ Water reaches plants/target area
✅ Easy to maintain after rain
